Welcome to the Under Construction wiki

Under Construction: Staging the future will be a two-week project led by the UK-based artists’ collective SpRoUt running from the 8th – 21st September 2008 at the Student Centre, Zagreb.

There are a number of starting points for the project:

- We begin by constructing a set upon which the project will be staged; a built structure made out of a series of elements that will be reconfigured each day to create a perpetually varying location for events. Façades, walls, platforms, chairs, tables, lights, speakers, lecturns, plinths – always in motion, always appearing in a new role as the project’s participants collaborate on directing the action.

- We begin as a group of individual practitioners with distinct concerns and skills, but also with a commitment to collaboration. We are sculptors, animators, theatre designers, film-makers, painters, musicians, writers, and performers. We ‘show and tell’ each about what we do apart, then experiment with what we can do together. We begin by asking, what is SpRoUt? How does it work? Of what is it capable? With these questions we connect to groups everywhere, working out how to be a ‘WE’.

- We begin by looking back as a method for producing the new. Research is an important part of our work, individually and collectively, in the form of archival treasure hunts. We collect objects, ideas and practices from the past and use them to begin again. Through appropriation or inspiration, past art and past life lends itself to staging the future.

Rather than superimposing a set of themes on the project from the outside, the theme of Under Construction is the project itself. Our ideas come out of the materials, processes and contexts we work with. As such, the projects’ emergent themes are:

STAGING AND CONSTRUCTION
THE RELATION BETWEEN THE INDIVIDUAL & THE GROUP
THE RELATION BETWEEN THE PAST & THE FUTURE
